Dragon doors

A letter from Marvin

Dear Mother,

I let my trust misguide my sense for the truth. I thought Erki was so nice to help us, but he has been lying to us. His real god isn’t Corellon it is Cort. I should have known. It also turns out he is working for Lennex Syndertoorn. He has to deliver a proposition to the underdark. If they help him fight in the war they will get a piece of land on the surface as a reward. We are not going to help Erki anymore. So he is now alone in the underdark, I don’t think he’ll survive long.
We went back to Sir Braford and Sharwyn, nothing really changed, they still looked so emotionless. It was weird to not have a sense of what someone is feeling or thinking. We tied a rope around them and took them back to the tree. Belaks body was still lying there. We had no other choice than to chop the tree down. Masmoir took his great axe and chops the tree down in no time. He’s got a lot of muscle in that little body of him. It didn’t help though. Because Braford and Sharwyn where now lying on the ground motionless. In the middle of the tree there was a magic stake, we destroyed that but without result. Healing also had no effect. Sooo… We decided to make a stretcher to carry the two.
On the way up we encountered Durn, he now had more guards. Three crosses were next to Durn with people hanging on it, with the Stanehold logo on them, one of them was Erik. Ajani carefully tried to free Eric, while Garrick and Darius performed a perfect distraction, but to no avail. So we attack. Masmoir throws one of the hobgoblins in the pit, Garrick frees Eric and Ajani is firing away with sizzling beams of who knows what. Darius his words hurt, but his rapier hurts even more. And when Garrick his arrows hit, they hit hard. Eventually we went back to where the Kobolts reside.
I am very glad I met these great fighters. They seem to quite like me as well, I presume it’s because I also prove to be of some use. So mother I think I finally made some friends, I will send you money as soon as I am back in Stanehold.

Best regards, your son.

Greed and Deed

Boys and Girls,
Giants and Dwarves,
Come closer to the fire.
gather your souls,
your eyes and ears,
for this tale about desire.
The heroes from which,
you’ve already heard,
were met by glazing eyes.
Sir Braffort,
and Ashwin too,
were close to their demise.
But still,
my Friend, Ajani
Was missing a smaller girl.
A daughter to one,
A sister t’ another,
hopefully not a burl!
Ajani looks further,
and finds a hole,
in which he finds a glass.
luckily,
no thing like bones,
an awful thing to cross.

Just a little potion,
that replenishes his health,
drank away in stealth!
And while I then said,
what a thing to do,
Mazmoir made a move too!
He swung his giant axe,
right against that tree.
then our rescuees got hurt,
Like an arrow to the knee!

“Stop, you baffoon!”
Gerrick quickly said.
If you go on this way,
they’ll surely end up dead!
So Mozmoir stopped,
and we all thought,
what we’d do after.
make them follow us,
away from the tree,
or fill them up with laughter?
We tried our best,
and got them away,
but to little effect, it’s sad.
we tried to rest,
but not even time changed
them for good or bad.
We continued with our quests,
and found a room with books.
some scrolls were found,
and be amazed!
a book with dragon looks.
After this,
we find ourselves,
in a room with a glow.
but do not be afraid,
for that light,
but fear that shadow!
Marvin saw,
something move,
and went to investigate.
But when he wanted,
to draw back,
it was already too late.
A shadow leapt,
from the wall,
fighting all our friends.
But the jokes on him,
and we fought,
through his defence.
Back to the statue,
a dragon with red eyes.
reflected the light on a tile,
but nothing to our surprise!
Then Ajani sat down,
and spoke some words,
that he suddenly could read.
engulfed in flames,
he came out alright,
but don’t try that at home tonight!
After this all,
a hallway in sight.
holes too small for a man,
but trough it shines a light.
I remember a light,
that I had seen before.
But we couldn’t get through this,
without a door.
Little did we know,
we were in for a fight.
so we searched for ways,
to get to that light!
When all options were considered,
and nothing with success,
Mazmoir felt we should blow,
the wall in a mess!
And although I am a man of words,
deeds count for all.
so I blew,
right into the wall.
Silly old me,
I got caught by surprise.
when a fiery worm,
sought our demise!
“Gerrick to the rescue!”
Must he have thought,
but shot Mazmoir in the back,
Amused, the dwarf was not.

After some struggle,
we shot the worm down.
out came two sapphires,
fit for a crown.
But Ajani got greedy,
and wanted some more.
so we sought the old light,
to settle a score.
We fought the new dragon
without breaking a sweat,
but all of the monies,
was taken by Ajani, how bad!
Aother room, another room!
this room, needed a broom!
we found another dragon,
but dust had set,
on the plate I wanted,
to balance on my head.
All kinds of effort was taken,
to slow my dance down.
but long story short,
it fit like a crown.
I must say thought,
Marvin can climb!
but all it actually did,
was costing us time.
But then things grew dark,
as we all felt it was right,
to finally help,
our friend Ericky tonight.
We went down some stairs,
and were greeted by rats.
Mazmoir heard voices,
told him to kick our heads!

but all the rats were slayed,
like cards they were played,
but we needed rest,
to go on with our date.
We found a nice spot,
and laid ourselves there.
a little sleep could no harm,
so we could get back to arm.
and while we slept,
some mushrooms crept,
and our faith had turned,
as Ericky might want us dead!
You hear this right,
as amazed as were we,
Coralon was never the God,
for our Ericky!

Showdown at the Tree
Chronicles of Garrick vol.1

So after we had defeated that bugbear we searched the other doors of this hallway. At the Eastern door we found another hexagonal room, or is it octagonal, I always mix those up. In it we found some skeletons tending to a twig blight. Ajani made a reasonable case that they would probably come back to bite us in the backs if left alone so we decided to eliminate any skeletons we would come across, good riddance if you ask me though.

We knew there was another door headed east, which was probably the direction we had to go, so to be sure we would not miss any skeletons or other secrets we checked the only other door in these halls. This northern door led us to a room with several goblins in it, some of them workers and one of them lightly armored. We attacked the group immediately when we saw them, unfortunately killing one of the workers along with the guard, which was my fault, I should’ve checked them better before opening fire on them.

The remaining worker gobs were no threat, but did get us some valuable information. The room we were standing in had downward staircases in the East and West. According to the gobs, the Western one led to a hallway which contained some sort of dragon statue. It might be interesting to investigate later but we had bigger fish to fry at the moment.

The Easter one was supposed to lead to the Grove where Belak resided so we took that one first. At the bottom of the stairs we found a long hallway which lay in the southern direction, if my sense of navigation down here is still somewhat reliable. At the end of the hall there were two doors, both on the eastern wall. Ajani and Marvin craftily opened the first of those doors, the seeming ease at which these two can open locked doors does make me worry sometimes where they had learned such a skill.

Behind the door we found something resembling a study. A desk in the centre of the room, several bookcases along the walls, this might as well be Belak’s personal room. Ajani searched the bookcases for anything valuable, maybe even a hidden switch. No switches, but he did find an interesting tome, bound in a leathery skin. The writing on it doesn’t seem to make sense to any of us right now, but Ajani told us he had some sort of ritual for that. We could use a bit of a breather so we decided to take some time and rest up while Ajani read the mysterious tome. Darius, however, was a bit restless and a lot more interested in the second door. While he went to examine that door, I wanted to have a look at the desk in the room. While I was looking at it I heard Ajani whisper something about fire lords? When he turned the next page all I noticed was a blast of cold rapidly expanding in the room and it left me knocked out of my senses.

When I came to, I noticed the doors had been barricaded and some of us were sleeping. Not a bad idea I guess, we could still use quite some rest, surely if we are as close to finding Belak and his prisoners as I think we are. A little while later I was told to take a guard shift. During my shift I heard scratching against the back of the bookcase that was barricading on of the doors. I didn’t feel that great yet so I was a little on edge and I almost woke up the others immediately. Instead I pushed myself against the bookcase, hoping that whatever was behind it would stop after realising the bookcase couldn’t be moved.

Instead, after quite a while, small branches started to wrap around the bookcase just as some of the rest of my party started to wake up. I felt the bookcase topple over and could make it out from under it just in time. Turned out, there were twig blights trying to get in from the other side. With the help from the rest of the group we could quite easily defend ourselves from the four walking trees, which meant we could go back to our beds to rest up for, what I hoped to be, the final stretch.

Waking up all rested, we pressed on through the bookcase and eventually we did find ourselves in a grove, like the gobs had told us. We could see a large tree in the distance which seemed to be the center of this place. We head out towards the tree, taking out some more twig blights on the way. I did sense a lot of humanoid presence nearby, in large numbers. Probably goblins so we tried to avoid these groups as best we could. At the tree, we found a group of three people standing beneath it. I though it to be the missing persons Ajani was looking for, but it seemed that only two of them were among this group. But they didn’t really seemed like themselves, their skin was like bark and their eyes were empty, like under a spell of sorts. The third one turned out to be Belak, which was a lot less goblin-like than I had anticipated to be honest.

Belak tried to convince us to surrender ourselves to the tree. For a moment I actually thought Ajani was going to do just that, but we all found out it was just an attempt to get close to Belak and strike when he would not expect it. What happened after that I cannot readily remember as it all happened so fast. Twig blights turned up from the tree, a giant frog swallowed Mazmoir, and Marvin started shooting at the tree (which was actually a good idea in hindsight). Eventually we took down Belak, I believe Darius dealt the final blow, all of us survived the encounter and the people we were looking for were saved, or at least they stopped attacking us. What’s left for us now is to find a way to cleanse these brainwashed prisoners, find the last prisoner, and fulfill our promise to bring Erky to that tunnel to the underdark. After that, we can finally head back outside, of course not before we free that dragon youngling, I do hope he’s doing alright all this time though.

Mazmoir's Rage against goblins

After defeating the goblin commander and his bodyguards and some weird spell caster the commander surrendered to us when he saw his comrades die by our hands (and the ground below).
I, Mazmoir thought it would be wise to kill this commander as well because you can never trust a goblin but Garek convinced me somehow to not do that. All that rage that was building up I didn’t know how to control it but yet I did. We looted the place and found some interesting stuff I suppose because our little friend was casting spells again. When I spoke with the commander about the chest he said it was his and I couldn’t have it except if we kill the kobolds upstairs. He said there was a 100 gold reward for it. But as a dwarf 100 gold is nothing to me so I thought maybe I can make it more. So eventually it went up to 300 gold. Mazmoir was pleased. But first things first we needed to go down stairs to help the prisoners get out from the big boss whose name I don’t remember. After we got somehow down in the pit it was kind of dark there. So we explored it. Marvin saw someone and went to him which was not the best move to do because as soon as he noticed us we were attacked.
We somehow managed to defeat them but there were other sounds closing in to us. And there were more attackers! Aaaaaaand they got defeated as well. Mazmoir was strong as fuck again. After we defeated them we went to some doors and checked them if anything was inside. There were sleeping goblins in one room. I didn’t hesitate to behead them but I was stopped after killing two of them. My inner rage against goblins wasn’t good for this mission so I had to keep myself in check with the help of Garek. We found some goblins in every room there was doing various stuff. Some experimenting and some wine making. We also found a armory which lead to the next hall. After we walked some time we entered a room with 3 doors. Garek and I checked one of the doors while Marvin went to the northern door. I guess it was north though. We found nothing special in ours but we heard something coming from the room that Marvin opened. It was a bugbear. Marvin was somehow attracting enemy’s. We fought the bugbear and won. (maybe we should not let Marvin check any doors)

Ajani's Diary: 3th of Mirtul
Frozen Meepo, Dead Goblins

Dear Diary,

I’ve found myself in an underground keep, some people might even call it a citadel. I’ve met a group a mind liked people and we’ve been running through the dark citadel in hopes of finding the Emberfall siblings.

We soon found that kobolds and goblins have invaded this long lost place, and on first sight the kobold’s seem more friendly, one in particular has been helping us: meepo.

I’m sad to say that Meepo has been frozen and eaten by the white dragon wyrmling, myself barely dodging the blast of frozen air.

We brought back the dragon to the kobolds and as promised we received our rewards: A beautiful feather and a spell scroll. Now don’t worry diary, our intention is to release the dragon from it’s prison, although I am not sure what we will do with the dragon in the mean time..

I forgot to tell you about Erky, a prisoner we freed from the goblins, apparently gifted in divine magic, we quickly decided that he would be a welcome addition to our group. And thus we went searching for his holy symbol, taken by the goblins. Coincidentally the tracks of the Emberfall siblings were leading in the same direction. We found the goblin living quarters and fought with its ruler: Durn, a tough battle later and we had him cornered, hopefully he’ll be able to tell us more about the holy symbol, siblings and the goblin king Belak.

Welcome to your campaign!
A blog for your campaign

Wondering how to get started? Here are a few tips:

1. Invite your players

Invite them with either their email address or their Obsidian Portal username.

2. Edit your home page

Make a few changes to the home page and give people an idea of what your campaign is about. That will let people know you’re serious and not just playing with the system.

3. Choose a theme

If you want to set a specific mood for your campaign, we have several backgrounds to choose from. Accentuate it by creating a top banner image.

4. Create some NPCs

Characters form the core of every campaign, so take a few minutes to list out the major NPCs in your campaign.

A quick tip: The “+” icon in the top right of every section is how to add a new item, whether it’s a new character or adventure log post, or anything else.

5. Write your first Adventure Log post

The adventure log is where you list the sessions and adventures your party has been on, but for now, we suggest doing a very light “story so far” post. Just give a brief overview of what the party has done up to this point. After each future session, create a new post detailing that night’s adventures.

One final tip: Don’t stress about making your Obsidian Portal campaign look perfect. Instead, just make it work for you and your group. If everyone is having fun, then you’re using Obsidian Portal exactly as it was designed, even if your adventure log isn’t always up to date or your characters don’t all have portrait pictures.

That’s it! The rest is up to your and your players.
